CORE is a Monash University centre that operates within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and is part of the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. The Centre is a unique collaboration of renowned national and international researchers and educators studying every facet of obesity .
Obesity is shaping to be the pathogen of the 21st century. Obesity is now a disease considered at least equal to smoking as a preventable cause of premature death. Obesity ruins health, destroys quality of life, and generates premature death. Obesity is now epidemic in our community with more than 20% of Australian adults obese (i.e. they have a Body Mass Index greater than 30 kg/m2).
CORE addresses this widespread community need for a professional body that specialises in this problem. CORE's differentiation lies in the centre's application of a multidisciplinary approach to the study and management of obesity, through integrating strengths in epidemiology, public health, basic science, clinical research and therapy, and professional and community education.
CORE’s ultimate purpose is to preserve the health, happiness and life expectancy of millions of Australians.
