The CMRI was founded in 1958 on a commitment to the prevention of childhood diseases through scientific research. The focus is on fundamental research into human development which involves the study of the progressive changes in body cells from the moment of conception when the genetic basis for each individual’s biological future is determined. It is during this early development that faults may occur - faults which are either imprinted genetically within the cell or which occur as the result of environmental hazards.
The rationale behind this research program is that if we can determine how and why these faults occur, it may be possible to either correct or modify their effects. Although unique in Australia, the CMRI is part of a world-wide scientific community working in partnership with the same vision of better health for all children.
