Milyakburra School is located in the very remote community of Milyakburra on Bickerton Island, approximately 640km southeast of Darwin and 40km off the Arnhem Land coast in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The population of the community is approximately 220 and the main language spoken is Anindilyakwa. The traditional owners of Bickerton Island are the Warnindilyakwa people, but are referred to by their language name Anindilyakwa. Milyakburra is approximately one hour by boat from the township of Alyangula, on nearby Groote Eylandt. However Milyakburra is generally accessed by air; chartered air services are only available and the community has an all weather airstrip.
Milyakburra School is part of the Arnhem Group School and provides education to students from early years to middle years. The school serves an important role in the community and school activities attract participation from parents and members of the wider community.
