Aitkenvale State School is located in the Townsville District and services the community of Aitkenvale and surrounding Townsville suburbs. The student population draws from many areas of Townsville. Townsville is a city of approximately 160 000 people. A significant percentage of the population of Townsville is transient due to large army and air-force bases and a multitude of government offices. The community consists of a number of different groups including a large business community, defence force personnel, industrial workers, professional occupations, university students, unemployed people, or people receiving benefits.
Within the school community children come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds with a growing trend towards single parent families.
The student community includes students from many different ethnic groups with a significant number of Aboriginal and Islander pupils. The are a number of families within the school who have English as a second language and quite a few of these children enter Aitkenvale with little or no knowledge of English.
There is a wide range of intellectual abilities including gifted children, children with learning difficulties, children with identified intellectual impairments, language disorders and autism spectrum disorder and at times a small number of children with physical disabilities.
There is a significant turnover of students throughout the year.
