St Michael's School Palm Island is a Catholic primary school with its origins dating back to 1938 - established where the present airstrip is located. Its present site (est. 1969) is located on the outer rim of the main residential area, with a beach front, a creek, the main road and green hills forming part of its surrounds. Palm Island is about 55 kilometres NNE of Townsville.
The school was the first established on Palm Island, in 1938, by the Sisters of Our Lady Help of Christians. In 1945 the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Sisters took charge of the education of the children and remained a presence on the island until 2011. Their mission 'Witnessing the power of truth by love.' remains our school motto. In 2010 there are approximately 150 students at the school, which in recent years has been undergoing an extensive building upgrade program.
St Michael's School exists to service the community's aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: all the students being of aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. Parents want their children to be well educated, to have many and varied opportunities for growth, and to obtain the ability to communicate effectively in Standard Australian English.
