Smithton Primary draws its students from the town of Smithton and surrounding rural areas. Many students travel long distances on a bus in order to attend school. The current school census population is 302 students Kinder to Grade 6. Thirty of those students were in Kindergarten and there are 12 classes Prep to Grade 6. The number of students who have little or no contact with school or education prior to their Kinder year continues to be a significant challenge for Smithton Primary. The implementation of our Birth to year 4 program has addressed some of these issues for our current Kinders. Achievements of our Indigenous students is an issue that is being addressed through a recently completed Dare to Lead snap shot and ensuing staff PL. The achievement of our Preps in numeracy was intermediate and trending up, while in literacy it was low but stable. The achievement of our Grade 3s in both literacy and numeracy is intermediate and stable. The Raising the Bar, Closing the Gap Literacy initiative at Smithton Primary and the ongoing commitment to Count Me In Too and Mental Computations in Numeracy will positively impact on continuing gains in Literacy and Numeracy.
