LALE's teaching and research builds broadly on four traditions of thinking and education practice:
- a language education tradition, which informs our work with its focus on learning, on literacy, on dialogue and interaction;
- a cultural tradition that informs our work with its focus on education and culture, education and identity, language and identity, multilingualism, multiculturalism, cross-culturalism, Asian studies and internationalism;
- a linguistics tradition, understood principally as applied linguistics in the widest way, that connects our work to the world of identity, subjectivity, and society, languages in society as factors and aspects of opportunity and human relationships; and
- a learning tradition, which orients us towards practice in teaching, and the interconnections between learning/literacy and the acquisition of knowledge.
