The Melbourne School of Design (MSD) is the graduate school within The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at The University of Melbourne. The School’s launch in 2008 was the next stage in the evolution of teaching and research in the built environment disciplines, which began in 1919 with the formation of the Melbourne University Architectural Atelier. MSD is emerging as a vibrant community of exceptional staff and students whose interests and expertise focuses on exploring and shaping the habitable environment. Our graduates discover how space affects the human experience and how to shape the modern physical world in positive, sustainable ways.
Sited in the Parkville campus of the University of Melbourne, and within the intellectual and cultural centre of this cosmopolitan city, MSD is a stimulating place to study and research. Inspired by the urban forms and spaces around them – from the historic and cinematic to the cutting-edge and intimate – our students can draw upon their immediate environment to inform their work. The city becomes a laboratory for local stimuli and a means for creating dialogues with other regional and international sites. Our aim is to position MSD at the nexus between teaching excellence, research and industry, by offering a portfolio of graduate programs that result in world-class professional qualifications and post-professional enhancement programs.
